Nkeng

291 kinderen
9 klaslokalen
6 leraren
Due to the bad state of the school building and a lack of teaching materials and teachers, the quality of education is harrowing at Nkeng’s primary school. LiveBuild and Knowledge for Children join forces to, together with the community, improve education and offer the 291 children a good future.

A leaking roof

Nkeng’s government school has 291 children divided over 9 classrooms in bad conditions. The roofs are leaking, the structure of the walls is in bad condition and the doors and windows won’t shut. Because of this, the children have trouble concentrating and are often sick. In addition, the teaching materials aren’t safe in the classrooms. The renovation consists of a new roof, stucco work, painting, a floor and new doors and windows. The school will also get new toilets hooked up to the local water network.

The community pays teachers

In Cameroon 80% of children go to school, but in many cases children still leave school illiterate after 6 years. At the moment the school employs two teachers paid for by the government. The parents pay for an additional four teachers. This shows the intrinsic motivation the parents have to improve education. So far, the villagers have managed to come up with part of the financing necessary for the renovation. Besides that, they provide voluntary
work to realize the project. The school also participates in the textbook-education program run by Knowledge for Children.

Action for Nkeng

The 24hour challenge by LiveBuild, Impulsis, the city of Utrecht, dr. Hofsteestichting, kringloopwinkel Pelgrimshoeve, Port4Growth and stichting G.G.D. Baron van Hardenbroek Van de Kleine Lindt and others make this project possible.
